He would be disappointed with all the homage to him… way to grand, I’m talking about Francis of Assisi… A man who came from wealth and status and gave it all up to live a life that he felt was what Jesus was really teaching about. Man oh man… what he went through… He died young (40’s) and would not recognize his town of Assisi anymore. There is modern Assisi below, then what they call Upper (the original and where he was actually from) and Lower, which is where a two level cathedral was built, two complete cathedrals I’m talking, with high ceilings, frescos, etc… and below, the is the crypt where Francis is now buried. I tried to get a candle for Carol B… but, they were 18 inches long.. and wasn’t sure how it would come home… they were to be burned in the Crypt chapel, or you could just take them home… course, that’s after you paid a donation…
Anyway… There was an earthquake in 1997, 8.0 on the scale, that really damaged many of the buildings… but, they have already been repaired and look great. One fresco fell from the ceiling in over 180000 pieces. It was repair in Roma, brought back, and now is back in place. Many folks, from all over the world worked and donated materials and money. So many of them felt this part of history should be preserved…
In Upper Assisi, it was a town even BC…. There was a Roman forum there, Roman baths, unbelievable how those Romans’ got around. Anyway, eventually, that empire collapsed, Christianity came in, and over the form and behind the Roman Pillars, they constructed a church. We got to go below the Piazza, where the forum was, and then above, into the church.
Hey… tired now… I’m signing off….
