June 13
We left Portomarin after getting up around 7:00 and getting to breakfast about 7:20... I think we began walking about 7:45... 7 kilometers uphill to start the day, 100 km elevation, it was a very good day. I did have an issue that has happened to me in the past, but not on this trip yet, but now I can say, it did happen. I occasionally get an itch on the bottom of a foot, and it does not go away (I have checked this would with my doc, and it's just a neuropathy thing that testing hasn't explained). I was the last one out of our room today and wanted to put on my shoes; at that moment, the itching started. This is NOT just a simple itch... I can't even describe how it feels, almost painful. I talked myself into going down to breakfast across the street and left my shoes untied... eventually it was time to start walking... I tied the shoes and off we went. I was aware of the itching on and off for probably an hour, but it eventually went away.
We stopped a few times, orange juice the first stop, tinto-verano is my new favorite drink. Red wine with carbonated lemonade. We shared a hot bacon and cheese sandwich for lunch; it was awesome.
As with most days, we saw several people or couples that we had seen one or six times before, always enjoyable.
We climbed about 300 feet in elevation early and then again midday, cloudy with sun on occasion, probably 65 degrees high. It's a great weather day for walking. We arrived in Palas de Rei about 2:30 and checked in to our room, 4 beds and a private bathroom. Elisa went out to scout the area and came back with wine and cheese and bread and olive oil and cookies 🍪 they looked just like that. Plenty of prepackaged cookies in Spain, but not many ‘fresh’ cookies and these weren’t either, but they were good.
Between a nap and shower and then a stimulating conversation that went on for quite a while, I totally forgot to check my phone. I had plugged it in to charge across the room and it was on vibrate so as not to bother the others. I accidentally caused some undue angst at home. As soon as I figured the phone was charged, I looked and had a couple missed calls and voicemails. You see, every morning, I talk with Jean after she text me she's up, hence, when she got no response after two 1/2 hours, she started to wonder what was up! Got everything straightened out pretty quickly and all was well, but felt pretty bad about the whole thing!
We went out for something to eat, but had noshed so much on the bread, cheese and wine, that we ended up having just dessert and coffee... perfect!
Good night all you amazing folks... a couple more times... from the Camino in Spain! God blesses us all!!!
Here we are... have our conversations... and being a bit chilly in the room!
Great walking day! Hope your foot gives you no further problems! Almost there.....Walk on.....
