Today
we arrived on Corfu Island, the town of Kerkia, and there were already two ships
docked. This is the one thing that
doesn’t thrill me about cruising… the huge ships that seem to all arrive at
some places. Anyway, I digress! Right next to us was a military boat that
looked like it belonged in a James Bond movie.
Apparently, the Greeks bought it from the US and it was being
refurbished for their use. Jer started
to walk towards it when we got off our boat and was waved away by a machine gun
carrying guard.
Another
morning greeted with the sun painting the water! We are in the Ionian Sea now, and this town has
two fortresses. The Old Fortress was built in 1546 and all the city inhabitants
lived within the walls; a new fortress, call, you guessed it, The New Fortress
was built less than fifty years later to better protect the Old Fortress. As you can tell now, the population is huge,
and the fortress is now just for visiting!
We got
off the ship with plans for some exploring and caching! Bought Jer a hat at one of the little shops… We
were away from the tourist stuff, so we were seeing how the folks that live
here really live! Got to the geocache
finally and, to our dismay, we never found it.
Spent 30 minutes looking, then gave up… Walked away with a bit on my
lower leg that has swelled up; but, we did get some cute pics of a cat playing
with a cricket! Poor cricket! Cat never ate it, just wanted to play!
More
walking and discovered more of the city, more waterfront, and the opposite side
of the fortress. Got further in the area
after we stopped for lunch and another geocache, which we did locate! Ran into
Gary and Liz leaving the museum in that area.
About an hour earlier they said they had run into Jens and Julie in the
same spot! We continued on, and got
adventurous again, and turned into the narrow housing streets and looked for another
cache. Took lots of pics… and yes we
found that one too! Then, we had to find
our way out of the maze of alley ways to the main drag!
Followed
the busier road and headed for the boat which was probably a mile away. As we descended toward the water front, saw
Julie and Jens seated in a sweet place enjoying some liquids! Chatted for a whiled and ended up walking
back to the boat together. Long day, as my
fit bit said I’d traveled 5 miles on foot!
WOOHOO!
Kitty at play!
Weird ship... space age looking!
I love abandoned buldings!
Our Snack with a view of the above pics!
These ladies where giving their 2 year old a bath and doing laundry in the park. They were asked eventually to leave... and not in a nice way I could tell even though I don't know the language!
Trying to act coy, there was a geocache behind this dude!
Museum where we saw Gary/Liz
Aha, Cache in the wall!
When we came back to the ship, there were FIVE cruise boats there!!!!
Shadow Selfie of us!
The new fortress!
So many small fishing boats... these are the ones in good shape... some were pretty scary looking!
What great caching & exploring!
