Today we left Sorrento, on our way to Roma…. But before I talk about Pompeii, let me say we had the most wonderful evening in Sorrento. My bites calmed down after the Benadryl and a nap caused by the pills…. Oh well, the swelling was down, I was happy. So, we had dinner at 8:15… that’s how late meals are there… at LaLaterna,,,or something like that… so delish and so neat to be eating on the piazza next to the meandering narrow street… not many cars, but lots of folks milling around…Then we walked and walked through even narrower streets, packed with shops. When you get in the swing of things here, it’s bittersweet saying goodbye! Just when you feel like you are relaxing and fitting in, it’s time for a new adventure…. But, then again, we were ready to continue on….
This morning, Pompeii… Rain was a threat, but fortunately never really came while we we there (two hours). We had a guide help us through; she wore a mic and we each had an earbud to hear her (I was thinking… no, no, no,,,, I am NOT a tourist…but it does make most sense… dang!). Awesome way to experience the city. First off, Pompeii is soooooooooo big! I was surprised… The streets we were walking on were the original streets. The ruts formed on the stone roads were formed by the carts and chariots; then, periodically, you see raised blocks on the streets… it was a crosswalk type structure that helped you cross the street especially when it rained… the water would pour down the streets and you could stay dry. Vesuvius… So much worse than Mt St Helens…. So much more distruction. The one picture of the boy, sitting down, holding his head and nose so he didn’t have to breath the ash…. Way too real!.... the lady laying down on her belly… she was pregnant…. You feel their pain.Visited the city’s brothel… oh my goodness… the menu of services were fresco’s painted about the rooms (btw, check out the photo of the bed in the room… STONE… Could be kept cleaner that way…. Egads)..I included a more docile picture. You will also see quite the phallic symbol. Couldn’t help but giggle over the whole thing.…
So, so much history… we’re talk BC and then 79AD… unbelieveable.
We are now in our ‘coach’ on our way to Roma…. Wonder what adventures are waiting there for us.
Oh yes... this is what you think it is that I am pointing to.... interesting society there in Pompeii!
