Decided we wanted to just wander the city with no agenda and that's just what we did. Explored another area and I got caught up taking pics of different Corbels (those brackets hold up a porch overhang. Fall is certainly in the air and the wind was picking up as the day went on... not bad, just a bit chillier. Oh, and we also saw gorgeous and huge cathedral with a chapel that was as big as an average church.
We thought it would be fun to go up in the Signal Observatory. Tours are limited and led by docents we found out; bought our tickets and came back at the allotted time. The interior has 7 flights of stairs and, of course, masking was required. It still has most of the original timbers but also some reinforcements. They actually took it totally apart when inspections revealed serious moisture damage and an infestation of powder-post beetles (to the tune of over a million dollars) and sent it to a mill for repair and then put it all back together. Was a fun way to spend the afternoon! Stopped at a local beer spot and had a cool one before we headed back to the hotel.
This was the type of telescope that was on the top of the tower which watched for the ships, communicated with flags, contacted the ships owners who were in Portland... Pretty cool! |
