A Sailor's Most Important Friend in the Storm

Today was a great adventure in the car day!  We sought out six local lighthouses!  I got pics of five of them... the sixth one, oh darn, I thought I clicked the button, but alas, not hard enough.

Each lighthouse was pretty cool, but at the first one, it was the rock formations on the beach that caught our imagination.  They looked like petrified logs... but HUGE petrified logs.  In researching, the rocks are part of the Kittery Formation found in southern Maine and New Hampshire.  Mother Nature formed them with heat and pressure and the results are so unique!

Back to the lighthouses... first up, Two Lights State Park... this is the one where I only have one pic... very pretty!  Both are on private property so you can't get close.  All are on Casco Bay and further out is the big Atlantic Ocean!

Next up, we saw the famous Portland Head Light House.  This was actually our second time, as we had visited a few years ago when we cruised with the Diva's!  Still very pretty... Further out in the bay, we also saw the Ram Island Light House, which we hadn't seen on our last visit.  As we were enjoying the view, we could hear a buoy with a bell clanging away as the water had quite a few swells.  That sound is always so peaceful:  that is when you're on shore and not in a boat slopping around.  Side note, we found a side journey to another part of the park, and were able to snag a geocache!

On to the next stop, but first a nice brekky of toast and avocado... my fav... not sure if it's Jerry's but he ate it anyway.  It was a fun, upscale 'General Store' and a nice stop.  We've determined, this area and the homes... well... income is not a problem!

Next stop, was Spring Point Lighthouse.  Parking was limited, but we saw a car leaving, so, we waited till they were out... suddenly we hear sirens, and a huge fire truck, lights on, pulls into the spot at and the accompanying two vehicles managed to take up more of the lot. Jer stayed in the car, I got out and snapped a few pics and called it good!

Our last Lighthouse was Bug Light!  Walked out to it... quite the detail in the construction of this old light.  They are keeping it in good repair;  the walk to it, well, whoever thought of using the huge stones that they used had a hole in their brain.  Awful, awful ankle twisters, toe grabbers, and uneven like all get out.

The park next to the light house is an old shipyard (now reclaimed mostly as a park) where the Liberty Ships were built.  As usual, so much history...

Took a trip about 20 minutes north of Portland to Freeport where LLBean is headquartered.  WOW!  that's all I can say about that huge flagship store...

Fun Bags, the picture below I'm Talking about!
