Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory...our Community Service Project

Jerry organized a service project at the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory.... After lunch, we loaded up in the shuttles and made our way to the area. Two shuttle buses, some folks walking and then one van for Halley and Dan. We arrived and made our way to the the little amphitheater where we received our marching orders. Plus, he told us when we were done, they would do a little raptor demonstation for us.
We went to a new area they have have developed; The big need was for weeding... lots of little grass and other weeds in the area. Looked easy enough, till you're working in the heat.... I have a farmers tan on my neck, geesh! Got very, very warm...BUT we were very, very productive. As we finished up little areas, some of our guys brought in wheelbarrows of wood chips that we also spread.... I should't say we, cuz I never helped with that end of the project. Anyway, we made a big difference in the area! After we were all done, they gave us a presentation on raptors, and they had an owl we learned so much about! Did you know their eyeballs don't move, hence why they can move their necks 270degrees. Also, they are really very, very scrawny under there feathers... The one we were looking at looked to weigh 15 or more pounds... but no, only 2.5 pounds... Also, this fellow (and they are not sure if it's a fellow) is 25 years old (has a head injury, creating a depth perception problem, hence he lives in captivity now)... and could well live into his 60's. The whole day was awesome!
