The Foss Family takes on Bean Town!

Been busy, Been warm, Been tired! I think that about describes it. Boston is unseasonable warm… there average at this time of year is about 82… been above 90 everyday we have been here and the humidity rises more each day! Before I left Tacoma, I had found a gentleman through Trip Advisor ratings who could give us a private tour of the city on Sunday. David, his son, picked us up at 10am… and off we went till 3pm… 

Saw so, so, so much and loved the fact we were in an air-conditioned vehicle and we could stop, get out, check things out, and get back in a cool car. This was especially good for Halley… She seems to get more sedentary… Sure hope she can turn that around! Oddles and oddles of pictures, so I’ll just post a few. You all know, this area is just filled with our country’s history and one can only imagine the courage all these folks had. I’d be hard pressed to say that we would find that same attitude in today’s society. We hit all the spots from historic to regional (like Little Italy, etc) to commercial (Bar that served as a front for the Cheers TV Show). Had lunch in a tavern Paul Revere frequented.. been there since the 1700’s, Warrens Tavern. When we first walked in, it felt old and even smelled old (not too gross or I would have left!); it was even air-conditioned… LIKE as we say on FB. Paul Revere’s home, The State House, Several Libraries, lots of churches, The ship, The Constitution, Harvard (way too huge!), Kennedy Library, a new Holocaust exhibit that really different, Faneuil Hall, Fenway Park, Bunker Hill, and that’s just a few of the places!

 Monday, we bid adieu to Halley and Dan, and then we took off on foot about 9:30am for more walking around. Jerry said we should get out before it gets too hot… Too late, at 9:30 it was 79 degrees! Anyway, off we went… Decided to checkout if we could find a geocache… and we did… awesome! Actually, located another one about 45 minutes later near Boston Commons. From there we kept walking, walking, walking… looking at things, checked out the graveyard with Paul Revere and a whole bunch of other famous folks. More walking around and ended up at the Boston Public Library …A beautiful building with a large courtyard in the middle and a couple restaurants, one of which we choose to have a late lunch. Nice, and relaxing and refreshing! After lunch we toured the building… just as beautiful as the NY Library! Okay… nuff of this stuff!

 This memorial has 6 difference glass box/towers... and engraved on each of them, in small letters, are the names of all the victims of the Holocaust

 Cool old churches, where they have boxes instead of traditional pews.  People would have their own box and would bring little metal boxes filled with hot bricks to keep them warm... I never really thought about how they wouldn't have normal heating there...

 Don't ever let me wear those plaid shorts in pictures again!

 The Washington Monument was designed after this, the Bunker Hill Monument.  This one stands 221 ft tall.  You can climb the stairs all the way up to the top!  However, this day, they were not allowing anyone to go up due to the heat! All stairs, and no air or fans!

 And this, my folks, is NOT a church on campus... was built as it's Annenberg Freshman Dining Hall... It reminds me of Hogswart!

Boston... a hot little place today!

Wow.... long day, warm day... Got to check in early at our hotel (like at 10am)... what a blessing...Did some exploring... man... it is so warm.  Boston Commons was beautiful... got another bridge pic there!  The buildings here are beautiful and the churches pretty spectacular-old and stately.  Wonder if they are filled on Sunday?

It's late... so this is short... tomorrow we have someone taking us around town... That should be way easier on Halley (well, and us too in this heat)!  So, Nighty night folks... will talk later!

 Boston Commons...

Bar Harbor, Maine... Gosh, they really do talk like that!

Used tenders to get to shore today… Water was pretty smooth so it was not a hard transfer. Bar Harbor started as a playground for the rich and their family cottages (a home with over 50 rooms, dining for 100 friends, etc, etc… Rockefellers, etc…) It’s still got ‘money’ but it also has a huge amount of tourism too. The towns shopping area is quite quaint… and quite pricey… bet, if we came in January, there would be many more deals and good prices. The town actually, in the 40s found many of it’s homes and hotels wiped out by a huge fire…. Acres and acres…They said that’s why they have such gorgeous ‘colors’ in the fall… the evergreen trees have not really grown back full force, and the deciduous trees are the ones that are prevalent now, bet you didn’t know that!
Took a bus to Acadia National Park, lots of history there… but one big thing they are know for are the carriage roads. Over 52 miles of roads that were built from 1913 and 1940 by a Rockefeller… all by hand… and for horses and carriages. Quite the feat back then! To this day, no cars are allowed on the carriage roads. Rockefeller donated it all to the park system which was his intent the whole time. We took about an hour ride.
As we left, we went to Cadillac Mountain… (Hill in our area it would be called)… but the vista’s and area were beautiful. Could even see our boat from way up there. Same sorta stone that was in Nova Scotia was here. All granite and everywhere! In someways, the views and stuff reminded us of Mount Constitution in the San Juans… same magestic views.
So… had to have a famous LOBSTER ROLL…. Was good… and now I can say I’ve had one. Lots of meat on it…
I’ll tell you, I’m tired… we have been going so much on this trip. Boston is next. Maybe I can get some rest there! Keep on dreaming Jean, temps are suppose to be stifling when we are there!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Smittyokie---- Halley signed up for it and performed...

Like Karaoke, but instead you sing WITH Michael and his band, one of his songs, well, he doesn’t sing with you, but plays with the band as your background music… anyway, in front of a huge audience. Halley signed up for it (even practiced before we left home) and was able to perform. Girl has guts!
All the folks in their bathrobes… well, it was robe night… Only about half the people there knew that, so it’s a mish/mash of clothes! We were the half that didn’t have robes on!
